Is it acceptable to require a student to use the supervisor's preferred software/tools?
Fred Brooks says in The Mythical Man-Month
"A good craftsman is known by his tools"
So if the student has the time, and skill you should force him to use the tools of the trade. … Obviously use judgment the goal is for him to write the thesis not to master tools, so if the deadline is approaching then focus on the product not the tools. …
