So, he is supposed to get an "actual" job after the completion of his PhD. – What do you mean by “supposed” and “‘actual’ job”? PhD positions are usually actual jobs and postdoc positions even more so. What are the alternatives you have to consider: academia vs. industry vs. unemployment? How much money do you need to make in what time span due to what reason? Please edit your question to clarify.
