When should a student attempt unsupervised research?

My friend who got his Ph.D. from the same advisor at the same time as me was also like this, and he's doing pretty well in academia. … And if you're ready, I don't think your advisor can talk you out of it anyway. At least, randome guys on the internet like us surely can't. …
