Using figures from papers in PhD applications
Is it okay to use figures from other papers when writing a statement of purpose for a PhD application, after of course citing the paper? Or do I have to ask for permission from the author?

I'm applying to math PhD programs in the US. In my statements of purpose, should I include references to the literature? I haven't done so yet, but I keep thinking I probably should.
