Speculative applications, i.e. application without a job announcement being published, are common (well, at least normal) in non-academic jobs. But I am not sure the situation is the same in academia. Somebody has suggested me to send speculative applications to different departments for teaching or research jobs. I was wondering what arethus considering the pros and cons of this type of applications?.

The pros are almost evident (more exposure). In factHowever, I worry about potential downsides. In particular, how thewould potential employers look at mysuch an application and how they are going to consider? Could it make me in the future.look bad? Is there any other downside for job-seekers in academia to send speculative applicationsI haven't thought of?

Remove the part that calls for open-ended discussion. Re-focus on the pros and cons, on a question that at least should have a definite answer.

Before ending this question, I appreciate if you share your personal experience or your insights (suggestion) about how to prepare a speculative application.
