Dec 28, 2015 at 21:16 | comment | added | corsiKa | What is this work that was revised? 80% of what exactly? Is it 80% of the lines of text the student wrote were rewritten by you? Did the revamping of the various sections change the content or was it more editorial?
Dec 28, 2015 at 10:08 | comment | added | Pete L. Clark | I deleted my answer because the picture which emerged slowly over the course of many comments on the part of the OP is quite different from the one depicted in his original question. I am no longer claiming that the OP made an advising mistake.

Dec 27, 2015 at 22:13 | comment | added | NYC10027 | Thank you for the feedback. The study only involves a few subjects (it's a case study). During the 2 month data collection, I met the student four times a week, 1.5 hours per meeting to discuss the findings (the student spent about 4 hours per week for data collection). In other words, I also played an active part in the data collection process.

Dec 27, 2015 at 14:26 | comment | added | Federico Poloni | Another point which is not clear but may be crucial is what this "data set" is and how much work it was to get it. If gathering the data alone is a massive endeavour (for instance, interviewing hundreds of subjects, or performing months of reactions and measurements in a lab), then IMHO the student still deserves to be first, no matter how much rewriting and polishing you did. If I understand correctly, your 80% figure is not relative to the total, but to the data analysis, writing and revision. So it still has to be weighted with respect to the total amount of work required for the paper.

Dec 27, 2015 at 12:52 | comment | added | NYC10027 | Sorry for not making it clear: I listed my student as the first author. I know my question will not make any difference to the order of authorship at this point. But, unlike many of my colleagues who do not contribute too much to their students' works, I felt that in my case I've done most of the work. I'd like to know if there is any clearcut guidelines stipulated anywhere.
Dec 27, 2015 at 12:47 | comment | added | O. R. Mapper | Please clarify: "I listed my student as the coauthor and myself as the corresponding author." - while doing so, you have not yet indicated any ordering of authors, right?
