Aug 29, 2014 at 15:18 | comment | added | Aky | Thanks for the link. Interestingly, the accepted answer over there opines that taking (and acing) the GRE math exam might be a good step forward. While I think you and I would agree that acing GRE is not necessarily indicative of a good grasp of math at the upper undergraduate/graduate level, but given that my options might be limited, I guess I can't afford to dismiss it outright either. I think I'll look into some of the courses on offer and get in touch with the coordinators - they ought to be able to advise me.

Aug 29, 2014 at 14:24 | comment | added | Aky | Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping someone will chime in about that aspect, which was really the crux of my enquiry (i.e. coming into graduate-level mathematics from an engineering background). My professed interest in GRE is something of a red herring here, and one of the mods changed my question title in a way that emphasised that angle (not that I blame them, as my question wasn't formulated accurately.) Perhaps I should modify my question somewhat...

Aug 28, 2014 at 20:40 | comment | added | Nate Eldredge | @Aky: It depends on the department. Some do not require or consider it at all. For those that do, its importance varies. Often it is used as an initial screening pass, so that a low score is a serious disadvantage, but a high score does not particularly help. (Of course, only the department knows what scores they consider "low".)
