At one point in my career, an administrator in my university said (paraphrased) "Being able to promote yourself with qualifications in interdisciplinary areas is nice, but after all .... interdisciplinary is just a word."

In short, when you are at a PhD level now, have a keen interest in what is otherwise considered as interdisciplinary studies, and have an eye on going into academic fields later, focus on one discipline where you find your greatest passion, allowing that you also demonstrate how your focused studies can be used in the interdisciplinary field. Follow up with post-doctoral studies that broaden your experiences in the companion interdisciplinary field.
