Sep 18, 2018 at 5:31 | comment | added | Wolfgang Bangerth | I'm both a researcher and a manager. I don't have solutions for how to deal with either entitled students or with faculty abusing their authority. But I have no patience for excusing bad behavior as "someone just being under pressure". We need to call it what it is: abuse.

Part of your job would then be to shield your team from pressure which could make them perform poorly. My point would be that if you with "zero tolerance" would fire your professors every time they get some entitled brat as a student maybe you will be spending much time hiring and not so much time doing research or whatever it is you want to/should be doing.

Sep 17, 2018 at 7:16 | comment | added | mathreadler | @WolfgangBangerth Are you saying you can't take the pressure of others pressure regulation?
Sep 17, 2018 at 2:48 | comment | added | Wolfgang Bangerth | @mathreadler -- I have no tolerance for faculty treating students poorly, pressure or not.

Sep 14, 2018 at 17:29 | comment | added | Wolfgang Bangerth | I do think that being under pressure does not excuse treating people badly.
Sep 14, 2018 at 14:53 | comment | added | user96212 | Thank you for your answer. It is in line with my suspicion that there's little I can do. I agree that my mentor was (is) under a lot of pressure. Their complete lack of self-reflection in the exit conversation and other information I have gotten since make me doubt that they know better now. As for your last paragraph, I am not sure the institution knows, as also the official I talked to did, on my request, not take any action. It is well possible, though, that word about these and similar incidents spread in the department.
