But if not, he doesn't have to reveal everything. People transfer for all sorts of reasons -- sometimes a combination of multiple reasons. It's often possible to give reasons that are true (for example "I felt this university would be a better fit for my research topic") without going into specifics about other factors. And he doesn't have to answer questions that they don't ask.
