May 23, 2018 at 21:16 comment added Jessica B @jpmc26 Depends on your meaning of manual. The bits that tell you how to identify that something is wrong, or how to press the buttons, is aimed at a general audience. But a manual that tells you how the car actually works and what it's specifications are is primarily aimed at a mechanic.
May 23, 2018 at 18:47 comment added jpmc26 "Car manuals" seems like a horrible example as they should be targeting the general population, no? Nearly every family owns at least one car and thus has a manual for its basic care.
May 23, 2018 at 15:37 comment added emory @J.R. I thought the primary purpose of a research paper was either to fulfill a contractual obligation of a grant or to advertise for a new grant. Reporting and educating is discouraged.
May 22, 2018 at 16:17 comment added J.R. Put another way, the purpose of a research paper is to report, not to educate. You don't teach your fellow researchers, you simply tell them what you discovered in a language that they can readily understand.

May 22, 2018 at 13:32 comment added user93085 I understand your point, but in my experience (maybe I am newbie yet), when you work on a project you may need to look to researchers on other fields too. As an example, as a physicist, if you are working on wearable gadget, you have to understand the research papers on these to build one.
