I plan to apply for an MS in computer science in the United States. I am unable to get the recommendation letter from my manager and thus would it be fine if i take the professional letter of recommendation from a senior software engineer in our team? I worked with the senior software engineer on a project he lead, while both of us reported to the same manager. While i can see that one should refrain from taking recommendation letters from colleagues while applying to universities, would the senior software engineer also be considered as a colleague if we reported to the same Manager?

Nothing forbids it. A positive evaluation is better than none. The point is that if I write a letter for you that would likely count as none.– AlchimistaSep 27, 2021 at 9:25
