If a student is enrolled in your class (at a college or university), then you cannot share non-directory details with outsiders (e.g. whether or not they are enrolled in your class). There are some exceptions, e.g. if a student is a dependent of their parents (for the purposes of taxation), you might be permitted to talk to their parents; and a student can sign a FERPA release form. Even in these cases, however, I tend to defer to my dean. | |
