Aug 13, 2017 at 14:51 | comment | added | JeffE | 100% of the time, the titles of the presentations are the titles of the papers submitted to the conference — Um...no. I have seen many CS conference talks where the words on the title slide were not identical to the words at the top of the paper. I may even have given some of them.

Aug 13, 2017 at 10:33 | comment | added | LSpice | @PsySp, aha! Now I agree that the percentage is very high, across all fields, but not 100%. There are many examples of speakers changing their titles slightly. I have even had a speaker decide to talk on another topic entirely after the programme had been printed and posted online.
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:33 | comment | added | Massimo Ortolano | @PsySp For many fields (or depending on the conference), no, the TC doesn't make any suggestion for improvements or corrections, just accepts/rejects the submission as is.
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:31 | comment | added | PsySp | @LSpice 100% of the time, the title of the presentation corresponds to the submitted paper/abstract or whatever submitted, and can be found in the conference program.
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:30 | comment | added | PsySp | @MassimoOrtolano Isn't the responsibility of the technical committee to correct the titles/abstracts? Somebody submitted short summary and someone approved it. In all cases, the title carry over to the presentation (and to the list of accepted abstracts). There should be a checking at that point.
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:26 | comment | added | Massimo Ortolano | @PsySp In many fields, there are no conference papers, just short summaries or abstracts which don't get any corrections from the technical committee.
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:25 | comment | added | LSpice | @PsySp, "100%" is definitely the wrong figure when interpreted across all academic fields. In mathematics conferences, often conferences do not have an associated collection of papers, and talks are presented without an associated paper. (In fact, it is much rarer that this does happen in mathematics, at least in my experience, than that it doesn't.)
Aug 13, 2017 at 10:09 | comment | added | PsySp | @MassimoOrtolano 100% of the time, the titles of the presentations are the titles of the papers submitted to the conference and they appear on the list of accepted papers/presentations. The error should be spotted and corrected there. I never saw any presentation with different title than the one submitted.
Aug 13, 2017 at 8:18 | comment | added | Massimo Ortolano | And how would you fix them?
