Sep 1, 2016 at 20:51 | comment | added | Carol | Is there an underlying reason OP has not discussed request with advisor although that seems the obvious easy route particularly if funding his PhD in a different project were not the issue. What jumps out is his line supporting why he wants to switch 'Recently I have found my 2-year results within my original field of study are invalid, and there are fundamental errors in it." I understand that OP might not have been productive because of feeling isolated and unknowledgable. Asking how to switch when one has established a sloppy/careless reputation puts a very different spin on it.

Aug 30, 2016 at 23:15 | comment | added | bingung | @ff524 Yes but just not so extensive. I have mentioned I am very interested in one of his active research fields and he agreed I could spend time on getting trained.
Aug 30, 2016 at 23:11 | comment | added | bingung | @Blaisorblade My funding is from my department so I am quite flexible, and usually the time is around 4 years, but under some circumstances it can be extended.
Aug 30, 2016 at 12:34 | comment | added | Wetlab Walter | This makes me so angry. When will PIs learn that while it might be cheaper to point a PhD in a direction and say 'figure it out', it's often better value for money to hire someone who has been studying that field their whole lives. It also, you know, doesn't destroy someone's life in the process.

Can I suggest something else that might help get more attention? I think that you could edit your question to be considerably shorter and more punchy. At the moment it feels quite repetitive, and I think it could be summarised in a few bullet points. If you feel the extra details are vital to include, perhaps add a "TL;DR" summary at the top.

Aug 30, 2016 at 2:19 | comment | added | ff524 | I'm confused. You seem to believe that your supervisor will need convincing, but you don't seem to have even discussed this with him yet. Have you tried explaining to him exactly what you just explained to us?
