Dec 2, 2015 at 21:25 comment added syntonicC @PS glass At least for many academics I know that are communicating quickly with others, the definition of "being polite" is equivalent to "doing what saves the most time for those they are writing to" not writing salutations and extraneous details. I even know some who would consider a long email to be rude. So it depends on your definition of "polite" and the kind of information conveyed in the email.
