Often in that year you begin to "self study" which gives you practice doing what actual scientists do. After a while you have to be able to learn subjects without courses anyways. Plus you tend to get a better idea of why you want a PhD after you have seen the alternatives and done a bit of self study in subjects that truly interest you. | |
