Jan 12, 2014 at 14:54 comment added WetlabStudent If you are good enough to get a phd in math or physics, one year in some job should not hinder your performance. Often in that year you begin to "self study" which gives you practice doing what actual scientists do. After a while you have to be able to learn subjects without courses anyways. Plus you tend to get a better idea of why you want a PhD after you have seen the alternatives and done a bit of self study in subjects that truly interest you.
