There is a paragraph in Halberstam and Roth's Sequences which begins, "it is clear that...." then all holy hell breaks loose. I spent a month trying to get through that paragraph and then gave up and just continued reading. It turns out that the paragraph ends ".... is far from obvious." That was the end of additive number theory for me. 40 years later, I'm still mad. "It is clear that this stuff is far from obvious." Sheesh. | |
