Either way, I wouldn't suggest doing nothing if you are being bad-mouthed. If talking to X is an option, that would be nice. Otherwise, if you can finish these two papers, that could help you make a clean break. The alternative is that you let this negative talk die a natural death, and continue to do great work with others. I'd be more inclined to the first; personally I don't trust such people to stop talking trash.
Apr 12, 2018 at 10:59 comment added Dirk Did you consider sending X a mail along the lines of "there are still two papers with your name on it lying on my desk and it will take me months/years to finish them all on my own; if you want to see your name published, why not help here?" Of course sugar coat it a little bit, but maybe this will make him at least respond...
