writing research proposal We see that in DARPA proposals here too. But not in NSF proposals, and usually not in a postdoc research statement. |

Will lack of teaching experience be a major hindrance for a faculty position? I hear that this might be changing. But your statement is certainly true right now. |

Going for PhD or MS in research right after under graduation? The short answer to your first question is: yes, you can expect to successfully complete a Ph.D. For the second, you'll need maybe a little "catchup time", but nothing seriously bad. |

When does one go for a double doctorate? it's entirely possible. |

When does one go for a double doctorate? Not entirely true. I know of many people who got an MBA from the top management schools in India, discovered that the value of this degree isn't so great on the international scene, and did another MBA in the US or elsewhere. My cynical side thinks that an institution granting a professional degree merely wants your money in exchange for the certification, and doesn't care about your prior qualifications. |

Going for PhD or MS in research right after under graduation? I think removing the "in India" part might make this sufficiently general to be of value to all. |

Is it ethical for an author to cite their own work with themselves as first author when they are not first author? I'm not sure why that makes a difference. I agree that in alphabetical ordering the "first" author gets unreasonably prominence, but listing the authors as "Z et al" doesn't solve the problem. |

Is it ethical for an author to cite their own work with themselves as first author when they are not first author? Even in the case you describe, I'd be leery of using the "X et al formulation". It seems unfair to whoever the first author really is. |

Should I keep generic reference letters from my supervisors? I think my answer reflects some misunderstanding of the question (I was interpreting "generic" as wr.t the student, not the target). So I deleted it :) - you can remove your reference. |

I am currently debating whether to leave my PhD program- any advice @StasK I think your views on the matter are a little harsh (and in a way contribute to the fear people have of leaving a Ph.D program). A Ph.D is not the culmination of your academic career. It's a career choice, and like any choice is right for some and not for others. People are tempted to go for a Ph.D because it looks like "more school", but it takes time to realize that it's a choice of career and that it might not even be the right one. |

Pros and cons of sharing dissertation on a specialised website why not just place it on your webpage and let google do the rest ? I find a number of theses that way. |
